The Great Wisconsin Butter Fire
On May 3, 1991, a massive warehouse fire in Madison, Wisconsin, sent melted butter, cheese, and lard flowing into nearby streets. The blaze forced roughly 3,000 residents to evacuate as firefighters battled flames, contained greasy runoff, and worked to prevent an environmental disaster. The fire smoldered for eight days, ultimately destroying two warehouses and causing an estimated $78 million in losses.
